What happens when I go through customs in Mexico? In the USA?

When you arrive to the airport to fly to Mexico, you'll want to present your passport at the ticket counter if you're checking luggage, and again at security when you go to your gate. They might ask for it again as you board the plane.

Once you arrive at your connecting flight still in the USA, you might again be asked for your passport as you board that plane. On the plane that flies into Mexico, you'll be given two (2) forms to be filled out. One (1) form is your tourism visa, which needs to be filled out, as well as one (1) declarations form per family. Fill out both before landing in Mexico. If they don't have the forms on the plane, they will be available to you in the Cancun Airport.

Once you've deplaned in Cancun, you'll be shuffled through a line to enter the country. The boarder control officer will look at your passport and will take a portion of your tourism visa. Keep the small portion he hands back to you with your passport for the duration of your stay. At this point, you'll be taken to the luggage claim. You'll grab your checked bags here. After that, you'll shuffle through another line where you'll present your customs declarations form. They'll ask you to press a button that will randomly illuminate a sign either green or red. If you press the button and it turns red, you've been randomly selected to have your bags inspected. This is normal, and nothing to be afraid of. Standard procedure entering Mexico and the USA.

Once you've exited customs, you'll enter a hallway with a LOT of venders, mostly taxi and rental car services. If you read the information provided by Thomas-More about your shuttle transfer from the airport to the resort, it will tell you to walk all the way out of the building, and look for the guys wearing yellow shirts holding "Thomas-More Travel" signs. These are the gentlemen who will take your voucher for transfer to the Royal Sands, and will board you onto a van. The ride is around 20 minutes.

When you leave Mexico, you'll take the Thomas-More Travel van back to the airport. At the airport, you'll check your bags at your airline's ticket counter where they will need to see your passport. You'll then go up an escalator to security where they will want to see your passport and ticket. Once through security, you'll go sit near the gates. Your flight will be assigned a gate about 1 hour prior to your flight. When you board the plane, they might want to see your passport again. This is usually where they take your tourism stub back.

Once you're headed back into the USA, they will have you fill out similar documents just like when you entered Mexico. This time, you'll mark that you are a resident, rather than saying you're a tourist.

Once you exit the plane, you'll shuffle through boarder control and customs just like you did when you went to Mexico, only in reverse. This time, they may have to grab your checked bag at your connecting airport, before going through customs. Once through customs, they'll have you check your bag again, and have you go through security, again.

What sort of things do you have planned for the week?

We wanted to plan a couple of fun things for the week. One is a boat ride to an island, snorkeling, food on boat, drinks, dancing, etc. We also wanted to have a rehearsal dinner one night, bachelor/bachelorette parties, possibly a deep sea fishing trip. There's also the spa!
